Can an iPad become test equipment?

I am doing  a lot of teaching in Central America.  As a part of the need, we have to figure out how to equip the biomeds there to perform performance assessments of medical devices.  They currently have no test equipment, simulators and almost no hand tools.  I need to equip about 20 government hospitals all across the country of Guatemala.  Because they have little or no money, we have to be creative.

I was wondering if there is adequate software and hardware to enable an Ipad or iphone to function as much of the needed biomedical test equipment.  (I read yesterday of an add-on to an ipad which would convert it into an oscilloscope.  There also coming a plug-in temp sensor which would plug into the audio jack.  Could an extension cable be added to allow this to measure temp in an incubator?)

Do you know of any apps or hardware additions that would allow smart phones or tablets to function as ECG simulators, pressure sensors, temp monitors, multimeters, oscilloscopes or any other type of test equipment needed for biomedical work?

Pat I have been an advocate of using devices such as the Ipad (Medtester) for years. Datrend is on the cutting edge of this technology today. Do consider using Android rather than Apple to reduce the cost. In addition I have several App developers working with me to develop high performance low cost solutions.. We need to talk as you and other leading individuals input is mandatory for development of a comprehensive system that will grow as needs dictate.
